Dragonwyck Summary & Study Guide

This was my first introduction to Anya Seton’s brand of American historical novel. Miranda is the heroine of the story, but Nicholas Van Ryn is the hub around which the story orbits. Yet when she succumbed at last, it was not because her body was weak but because her mind was curious. At first, Dragonwyck reminded me of Mansfield Park: I first found this in a used book store when I was about 10 or 11, and every few years I am compelled to pick it up again, even though I know it through and through. Ah, so that’s where I had heard this title before!

Not everyone welcomes Miranda to Dragonwyck. This story is enriched by historical events and I love that it is accurate!!! Once they are on the Mary Clinton, Nicholas who is free again, makes the boat stop by hanging a red flag setn the tower. M I really like swton tales and this one written by Anya Seton kept me entertained on some very cold and snowy days!


Poor tenant farmers at Dragonwyck, the European royalty who visit, and American icons such as Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, and the Astors are vividly brought to life. We know it wasn’t all in his head because Katrine heard it also.

All she sees is his godlike attributes, magnetism and charm. It is ruled by the autocratic Nicholas Van Ryn, who is so handsome, powerful, cultured that Miranda falls for him immediately.

Miranda and Dr Turner eventually discover that Nicholas poisoned his first wife, Johanna, with oleander. Her novel Devil Water concerns James, the luckless Earl of Derwentwater and his involvement with the Jacobite rising of Sword at Sunset Rosemary Sutcliff.

These, more than make up for some of the shortfailings in character. When a distant cousin invites her to act as companion to his young daughter, she leaps at the chance and soon arrives at the beautiful gothic mansion of Dragonwyck.

Once she mentioned them, I was a little crestfallen because they were stuck in my head. Miranda as a character never really fits in anywhere. Many people told me that it was in the style of Rebecca dragonwycm Jane Eyre, so it seemed a natural to me.

Like Seton’s later, historical heroine, Katherine Swynford, Miranda finds herself attracted to a man who married for convenience and whose wife is portrayed as deeply unattractive. And I setonn curious to see his present degradation.
